Best Songs for the Pool
“Funny how a melody sounds like a memory”
It’s a hot, summer day and I’m driving in my silver 2004, 40th Anniversary Mustang GT, complete with black hood scoop and spoiler. My tinted windows are rolled down and I’m driving on Baums Bridge Road in Kouts, Indiana, as my hair whips all around. I can still see how green and tall the corn is beside me as I roll by. I don’t have a care in the world. THAT is what I think about when I hear Eric Church’s song, “Springsteen”.
It’s strange, the things we remember when we hear a specific song. Strange how the brain triggers and evicts those emotions within us. Even stranger still, I bet we all each have a go to song for when we’re happy, or when we need to cry. I know I have mine. I have always been a lover of almost any kind of music. When I was little, my mom would play staticky classical music on the stereo in her car and I hated it. But now, it’s one of my favorite go to’s when I sit down to read, or to write, or if I’m driving and need a little bit of a break from reality and want to get lost in the smooth sounds of cello or piano. I also love 20’s swing music, Frank Sinatra, jazz, alternative, pop, r&b, rap, and country. In fact, the only kind of music I don’t like is that ‘screamo’ music that you can’t tell what people are yelling about.
So, I’ve put together a list of my favorite songs. These should be able to start you off because they're all great jams that you can take poolside! They’re all a little bit different, but my intention is that maybe you’ll hear one, like it and get lost in a rabbit hole that will trigger your own memories and create your own playlist.
