Sausage Bread

Ah, we’ve entered the season of endless baking, eating, snacking, and parties. So, what better way than to help celebrate that by a recipe!? If you follow along on Royal + Reese’s instagram, you’ll remember that Kait baked this a couple of weeks ago. It’s one of our very favorites and we make it around Christmas each year. This recipe is very near and dear to our hearts because our Grandma Tillie was an outstanding baker and when she made this, people would come r u n n i n g to grab a piece. We use a homemade dough for this bread and so far, it's the best thing during the holidays!

If you’re looking for breads to bake this season, check this recipe out. It’s perfect for breakfast or an appetizer! But my heart loves to bake it and then pass it out to all of my friends, while it's warm--for the perfect seasonal treat. Enjoy!

Sausage Bread

1 - 1 1/4lb pork sausage

1 medium onion, chopped fine

2 eggs

2-4 Tablespoons Parmesan Cheese

4 Tablespoons fresh parsley

1 1/2 cup Swiss cheese

1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese

Brown sausage, remove from pan to colander, leave grease in pan and add chopped onion just until transparent. Drain and add meat. Place meat on paper towel to absorb all grease. Cool. Place in bowl and add the eggs, parmesan cheese, and chopped parsley.

Roll out 8 ounces of dough fairly thin (about 6x14). Put 3/4 cup cheese down center of dough. Top with 1 1/2 cup meat mixture. Then top with rest of cheese mixture (3/4 cup). With shears, make 1/2 inch cuts on each side of dough, 3/4 of the way into meat mixture and bring these from each side one at a time overlapping snuggly, pinching the ends as you go. Place on baking sheet carefully. Let rise until light. Bake 15 minutes or until nicely browned. Remove from sheet immediately after baking to cooling rack. Freezes beautifully.
